Wissenschaftliche*n Mitarbeiter*in (Doktorand*in) in Computational Social Science

(Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L, 100% Arbeitszeit, befristet bis 31.3.2029)

Die Abteilung Computational Social Science (CSS) erhebt digitale Verhaltensdaten und stellt computerbasierte Methoden zur Erhebung und Analyse solcher Daten für die sozialwissenschaftliche Forschung bereit. Flankierend unterstützt sie Wissenschaftler*innen bei der Integration von digitalen Verhaltensdaten in ihre Forschungsdesigns. Forschungsschwerpunkte der Abteilung sind die Qualität digitaler Verhaltensdaten, die Entwicklung und Validierung von Computational Social Science-Methoden sowie der Wandel digitaler Gesellschaften.

Die Stelle ist Teil des vom BMFTR geförderten Projekts „WIEGE“, das darauf abzielt, politische Desinformation über verschiedene Plattformen hinweg zu erkennen. Sein Ziel ist es, junge Menschen und Jugendliche in sozialen Medien zu schützen und ihre Resilienz zu stärken. Das Projekt verfolgt einen interdisziplinären und integrierten Ansatz, der die Entwicklung einer nachhaltigen Dateninfrastruktur mit automatisierten Methoden zur Identifizierung politischer Desinformation über mehrere Plattformen hinweg kombiniert, sowie Wirkungspfade exploriert und mit effektiven Kommunikationsstrategien zur Sensibilisierung integriert. Das Projekt erfolgt in Kooperation mit den Universitäten Düsseldorf (Sozialwissenschaften & Informatik) und Mainz (Publizistik) und umfasst Promotionsstellen an allen Standorten.

Ihr Aufgabengebiet:

Analyse großer Online-Datenbestände (z. B. Social Media, Plattformdaten) zur Identifikation von Desinformations- und Kommunikationsmustern mittels moderner Verfahren der computergestützten Text- und Datenanalyse
Entwicklung, Anwendung und Validierung von Methoden des Machine Learning/Deep Learning zur Bearbeitung konkreter Forschungsfragen innerhalb des Projekts
Konzeption und Umsetzung von Datenverarbeitungs- und Analysepipelines (Pre-Processing, Exploration, Modelltraining) sowie Abstimmung von Datenanforderungen und Methoden mit Projektpartnern
Enge Zusammenarbeit mit Projektpartner*innen innerhalb des WIEGE-Projekts bei der Umsetzung von Arbeitspaketen sowie Beitrag zu den übergeordneten Zielen und Ergebnissen des Projekts
Präsentation und Publikation der Forschungsergebnisse in Zusammenarbeit mit Projektverantwortlichen sowie Anfertigung einer Dissertation im thematischen Kontext

Ihr Profil:

Masterabschluss in einer für Computational Social Science relevanten Fachrichtung, z.B. Informatik, Data Science, Informationswissenschaft, Soziologie, Kommunikationswissenschaft, Politikwissenschaft, Linguistik, Physik
Sehr gute Kenntnisse in R und/oder Python
Erfahrung im Einsatz von Machine Learning und Natural Language Processing in einem für die Sozialwissenschaften relevanten Themenfeld oder nachweisliches Interesse, sich diese Kompetenzen zügig und zielgerichtet anzueignen
Expertise im Bereich Desinformation in digitalen Medienumgebungen ist von Vorteil
Sehr gute Englischkenntnisse in Wort und Schrift, Deutschkenntnisse sind ein Plus

Starting on April 1, 2026, our Department Computational Social Science (CSS), Team Transparent Social Analytics, located in Cologne, is looking for a

Doctoral Researcher in Computational Social Science

(Salary group 13 TV-L, working time 100 %, limited until 31.03.2029)

The department Computational Social Science (CSS) collects digital behavioral data and provides computer-based methods for collecting and analyzing such data for social science research. It also supports scientists with the integration of digital behavioral data into their research designs. The department's research focuses on the quality of digital behavioral data, the development and validation of computational social science methods and the transformation of digital societies.

The position is part of the BMFTR-funded project "WIEGE", which aims to detect political disinformation across various platforms. Its goal is to protect young people and adolescents on social media and strengthen their resilience. The project pursues an interdisciplinary and integrated approach that combines the development of a sustainable data infrastructure with automated methods for identifying political disinformation across multiple platforms, explores influence pathways, and integrates them with effective communication strategies for raising awareness. The project is being carried out in cooperation with the Universities of Düsseldorf (social sciences & computer science) and Mainz (communication science) and includes doctoral positions at all locations.

Your tasks will be:

Analysis of large online data sets (e.g., social media, platform data) to identify patterns of disinformation using state-of-the-art computational text and data analysis methods
Development, application, and validation of machine learning/deep learning methods for addressing specific research questions within the project
Design and implementation of data processing and analysis pipelines (pre-processing, exploration, model training) as well as coordination of data requirements and methods with project partners
Close cooperation with partners within the WIEGE project in the implementation of work packages and contribution to the overall goals and results of the project
Presentation and publication of research results in cooperation with project leads and preparation of a dissertation in the thematic context

Your profile:

Master's degree in a field relevant to Computational Social Science, e.g., computer science, data science, information science, sociology, communication science, political science, linguistics, physics
Very good knowledge of R and/or Python
Experience in the use of machine learning and natural language processing in a field relevant to the social sciences, or a demonstrable interest in acquiring these skills quickly and purposefully
Expertise in the field of disinformation in digital media environments is an advantage
Very good written and spoken English skills; German skills are a plus
